Crum Creek Watershed

Water Quality Monitoring

Water Quality Monitoring on Crum Creek

Up to this point, CRC water quality monitoring  program has focused foremost on Chester Creek, and then Ridley Creek, in part due to the number of waste water treatment plants on the former.

In the Upper and Middle Watershed, the first  annual  of Upper and Middle Crum Creek snapshot is planned jointly by CRC and Marple Newtown High School, starting in spring of 2007.  All ninth graders will participate in chemical and biological sampling at one of four sites( Bartrams Covered Bridge and Mill Hollow in Newtown, and Hildacy Farm and Trout Run/Crum Creek Road confluences in Marple) on May 15th and 16th.  The US Forest Service had provided the School District funds to purchase test kits.  MNHS Science instructors Robert Sidlowe, Robert Speca, and Liz Marino are working with CRC instructor Jane Fava on developing this curriculum.

This annual snapshot will help provide a yardstick by which  evaluate the impact of extensive upstream development over time.

In the lower watershed, Swarthmore College students monitor Crum Creek and Whiskey Run in Smedley Park for CRC during the school year.
